THE ARTIST

Juarês Matter

Expression of the moment calls for a single, certain, visceral movement, with no rehearsal, like a radical move on the board

Liberty. Gesture. Movement. Body dynamics of the skateboarder. Creations of the skateboarder graphic artist Jim Phillips. The broad gestural brushstrokes of Roy Lichtenstein’s abstract expressionism. Pop art, and its mass culture. The Venezuelan sculptor Jesús Soto’s Penetrables series.

All of this arsenal of references have influenced Juarês Matter.

His sculpture comes from a process that involved painting, separation, re-assembly. He has developed his very particular technique by seeking and experiment – evolving over the years from his initial career as a painter, to the mix of techniques he uses today. Agility, skill, resourcefulness are keywords. Almost as if in a dance performance – as on the skateboard, so with the brush – the gestures must be calculated, and executed...fast. “Expression of the moment calls for a single, certain, visceral movement, with no rehearsal, like a radical move on the board,” he says.

Matter has been skateboarding constantly since his youth – hence the perception of lightness and fluidity from the movements of wheels on concrete, and the radical quality of his work: fluidity and effort, strength and control.

Matter has been skateboarding constantly since his youth – hence the perception of lightness and fluidity from the movements of wheels on concrete, and the radical quality of his work: fluidity and effort, strength and control – whether with the brush, or the board. The movements of his body bind aesthetics and performance in one, space and movement, lines in air. Reminiscent of Picasso’s “Light drawings” of 1949 (innovating, Picasso drew rapidly in the air, in the dark, with a torch: photographed, icon figures such as bulls and human bodies emerged, drawn in light). The means are different, the dynamics similar: both require precision and agility: the materialisation of the line is instant, immediate, permanent.

In 1996 Matter began to permeate his works with gestures originating from skateboard moves. The strength of the brush stroke grew – until it was the whole brush, applied with all the strength of the gesture, going beyond concentration, in search of a huge, vital balance.

The result is an expression of the content of his personal experience – marks on his soul that emerge randomly in the handling of the pictorial material, colour and form. His paintings are always seeking liberty in these ideas. Art critic Fernando Bini said of him:

“His work emanates from the intellect, seeking the essence and nature of painting itself. It is a discourse on painting that arrives at a moment in which his spirit conforms to this clear view that the paintbrush can go to the root of things, becoming a single brushstroke, whose function is manifested as if by the spirit, though hidden in the man.”

Born in Curitiba in 1963, Juarês Matter is self-taught – art is his passion since infancy, from his grandfather, a painter and painting teacher. He initially worked in advertising agencies – as creative assistant, layout man, illustrator; then for producers of video commercials, and in scene creation and design – but eventually gave way to his soul’s anxiety to be a painter and sculptor.

He has exhibited in various salons in Brazil and the rest of the world – including the “Salon International du Monde de la Culture et des Arts”, in Cannes, and the “Société Académique Arts, Sciences, Lettres”, in Paris, winning awards at both.

His works are included in important art and cultural collections in several countries.
