I WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO ARTIST'S WORK OF ART

THE ARTIST

Tercília dos Santos

I have always worked so as not to compromise my art and my spiritual journey. For me, being a Naïf artist is a commitment to the Beyond

The French adjective naïf means natural, or innocent, or, also, ingenuous. It describes something or someone generally a little childish, child-like or immature. The term Art Naïf describes a type of art that is popular and spontaneous, with simplified elements, usually multiple colors, and often representing themes of day-to-day life and scenes from the culture of a people.

Also called Primitive Modern Art, it is commonly produced by self-taught artists, that is to say, those who have no formal and technical knowledge of art, but also shows other virtues, such as authenticity. The French painter Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) is considered to be the precursor of the style and was recognized as such by the artistic avant-garde of the time, which included geniuses such as Picasso, Matisse and Paul Gauguin.

Tercília dos Santos initially worked in the beauty industry, but always felt attracted by art. One Sunday night, when she was 36, a marked episode transformed her life. She had a dream of Jesus, as a child aged 10: he showed her paintings of a wide variety of places and scenery, and when she awoke she was surprised to find she felt as if she already knew how to paint. The same day, she bought the necessary materials, and began to paint a picture she had seen in the dream – a flight of pigeons. Disappointed that she did not get the strong colors quite right, she sought a painting course; and it was at the Integrated Cultural Centre, in Santa Catarina, that she first heard of Primitivism, and Tarsila do Amaral.

From then on, things happened rapidly. Encouraged to continue with the style of her moment of discovery, she learned new techniques, such as veladura glazing. And in that same year, 1990, she began to receive invitations to exhibit. In four years of painting, she won the first prize at the Brazilian Arte Naïf Biennale of 1994. In 1998 she won the Divulgação prize, for art in letters and invitations. She felt privileged to have achieved success in her art career from the beginning, but also believes it was the result of a lot of serious work and dedication. “I have always worked so as not to compromise my art and my spiritual journey,” she says. “For me, being a Naïf artist is a commitment to the Beyond.”

The main substrate of her paintings is memories of her infancy. Her strong brushstrokes take us to essentially figurative countryside scenes, full of characters redeemed from her affective memory. Her repertoire floats between houses, small churches, small mosques, flowers, animals – and very often children.

The main substrate of her paintings is memories of her infancy. Her strong brushstrokes take us to essentially figurative countryside scenes, full of characters redeemed from her affective memory.

She was born in 1953 in the district of Uruguai, Piratuba, in the extreme west of Santa Catarina state, and had a hard childhood, with her sisters, as daughters of a farmer.

The country scenery and landscape, and the personalities that made a mark on her, now come back to her life, but revealing their luminous side: blue, pink or yellow horses; skies in various colors; enormous flowers. Each element of her repertoire obeys the internal order of her paintings.

She is a self-taught artist, with innumerable awards in art salons. Presented as ‘The Dame of Primitivist Painting in Santa Catarina’, from 2005 to 2007 she was part of a project by the Brazilian commercial organization Sesc, travelling to various cities, giving lectures on her life and Art Naïf to higher education teachers and students, and workshops for children. In 2006, she was the only person from Santa Catarina invited to take part in an international group exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Centre, United States. In 2008, she took part in the exhibition of Brazilian art at the Tabatinga Gallery, in Switzerland; and in 2012, the group exhibition of Brazilian artists in Rome – returning to Italy in 2019 for the exhibition of Brazilian talents at the Art Gallery of Florence.

Her work has been reproduced in various publications, and is in collections in Brazil and other countries. Where previously she worked for a long time with beauty, art and volunteering all at once, now she can dedicate herself only to art, and to the charity work that she so much loves.

“In painting, I tell stories,” she says. Her works express her strength but at the same time her extreme delicacy, enabling us to see the essence of a sensitive and creative soul.
