THE ARTIST

Marco Rocha

“What arouses my interest in this period are the shapes, axes, helmets and shields. Everything that was forged has an exquisite design", details

With a little push from the universe, you can't run away when you're predestined. Owner of the surname Rocha (rock in Portuguese), Marco discovered early on his ability to carve in noble stones and rocks.

At first, he experimented with wood, but as soon as he realized its limitations, he switched. He then proceeded to carve in metal. Another excellent material, but one that didn't captivate him.

It was the stone that definitely spoke to the artist: the attraction of the challenge and the rawness of this element captured him. "There was no doubt that it would be the way to get my message across", points out the Brazilian Marco Rocha, born in state of Rio Grande do Sul in 1969.

The self-taught sculptor as a child used to develop his own toys. In an early journey, he left home at the age of 12 and started to support himself. "I went to live alone and, for my daring, I got freedom as a gift", says the artist.

The boy, brave as a knight of the Medieval Era, a period of history that has always fascinated him, let his creativity run wild over the years. He found his identity in the abstraction of medieval symbols, carved in marble, granite and basalt.

“What arouses my interest in this period are the shapes, axes, helmets and shields. Everything that was forged has an exquisite design", he details.

The Medieval Era (Middle Ages, 10th and 15th centuries) was known for its religious themes, renowned architecture, painting and sculpture. The Era left to humanity great constructions, such as temples, churches and palaces. It was marked by two artistic styles: the first was the Romanesque, (associated with Roman culture), high middle ages (V and IX), represented by buildings with round arches, low and thick walls, small windows, and little lighting. The second was Gothic, late middle ages (12th and 15th), known for its large windows, high walls and lots of lighting. In the field of sculpture, metal, ivory and stone were used to create realistic images of angels and saints for temples.

Marco was inspired by national and international artists. He mentions with admiration Amilcar de Castro, a Brazilian professor and sculptor, signatory of the neo-concrete manifesto; the Brazilian sculptor and painter Lygia Clark, one of the founders of the Brazilian neoconcrete group. And, also, the sculptor, painter, and draftsman, American Richard Serra.

Marco opened his studio of monumental sculptures in Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina, in 2006. He participated in several national exhibitions, such as in Sapiens Park, at CCBB in Rio de Janeiro; and internationally, in Chile, Uruguay and in a series of galleries in Argentina.

With his medieval shields in hand, Rocha achieved professional maturity without ever failing to imprint in his works the sensibility of that dreamy twelve-year-old boy. "Art for me is aesthetic emotion through beauty, harmony and balance".
