THE ARTIST

Evandro Karvat

Our nature is being fragmented, broken up. I present these blurred images as poetry to remind the public that life is volatile

As soon as he feels that itch, Evandro Karvat gets a blank canvas and puts his palette of colors to work. “The biggest challenge is to produce a message that is coherent, that holds a dialogue with today, and does not serve only to decorate,” he says.

His theme now is the environment. He aroused interest for his “Volatile Nature” (Natureza Volátil) exhibit in 2017, when he was selected for the 20th Visual Arts Exhibition of the city of Cascavel with an installation about sea turtles threatened with extinction.

Going deeper in his research, he now also portrays other animals of the Brazilian fauna that run the same risk. These include the Marsh Deer (the cervo-do-pantanal, or blastocerus dichotomus); the Golden Lion Tamarin (the mico-leão-dourado, Leontopithecus rosalia); the Hyacinth Macaw (arara-azul, or Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus); the Toucan (tucano, or Ramphastos toco); and the elegant Margay, a small wild cat (gato-maracajá, or Leopardus Wiedii).

"Our nature is being fragmented, broken up. I present these blurred images as poetry to remind the public that life is volatile”. His friendship with pencil and brushes date from infancy, but more recently he has developed a new way of working, portraying figuratively with freer lines and dense spatulas of paint: "With the spatula, I discovered the freedom that I needed to work. This style allows me to throw off my artistic bonds, my fears”.

Between one application of the spatula and another, the colours interact and develop into expressionist figures. The vibrant tones and the subject of Karvat’s canvases inevitably evoke Franz Marc (1880–1916) – the king of expressionism for colors and animals – who celebrated in color and movement a beauty and truth of animals that he found difficult to see in man.

Karvat also admits his incursions into Impressionism, a movement that inspires him as he relates to its masters – Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec.

Entering Karvat’s universal of animals, we are impressed by the colours – they shriek, and stand out even more than the shapes. They are dragged into our field of vision as bright statements in their own right, and then form the figures.

Entering Karvat’s universal of animals, we are impressed by the colors – they shriek, and stand out even more than the shapes. They are dragged into our field of vision as bright statements in their own right, and then form the figures. In close-up, the image is a wild abstract. From far away, it is suddenly, sharply, clearly, figurative.

His latest series,Volatile Nature – Colors of Life”, comes with a new look, demonstrating his technical maturity. He has been holding solo and joint exhibitions since 2006. In 2017 he was selected for his first Visual Arts Salon, and in the subsequent years he participated as a guest artist curating exhibitions involving architecture, such as at the Casa Cor of Santa Catarina State and the Mostra Sul.

In 2019, the Volatile Nature project won Culture Incentive Law support from the seaside resort of Camboriú. A year later, he took part in a national charity auction for the Elephants’ Sanctuary, Brazil, in which two of his works received the highest number of bids.

His achievement of a consistent “author and theme” style of working has also been a success with the decorating profession. Evandro Karvat is frequently selected by architects and interior designers to compose styles of scenarios. He succeeds: to his delight, his work inspires both enchantment and dialogue, and has a profound influence on the awareness of the collecting public – far beyond the function of decoration.
